Movie Info THE DOORS: BREAK ON THRU - A CELEBRATION OF RAY MANZAREK is a hybrid concert and documentary capturing a 2016 performance in Los Angeles, CA by surviving Doors members John Densmore and Robby Krieger to honor fellow Doors member Ray Manzarek on what would have been his birthday on February 12th. The Doors were born when Ray Manzarek met Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in 1965. Ray became the beating heart of The Doors and the architect of their intoxicating keyboard sound. Manzarek's evocative playing fused rock, jazz, blues, bossa nova and an array of other styles into something utterly, dazzlingly new. The setlist from the concert consists of Doors songs performed by John and Robby alongside a cast of all-star guest musicians including Taylor Hawkins and Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters), Robert DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Exene and John Doe (X), Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule), Brian Ray (Paul McCartney), Andrew Watt and more. The film also includes rare archival footage of the band, conversations with Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, and esteemed music journalist Ben Fong-Torres, as well as new interviews with John and Robby. He actually sang and recorded in Paris: The lost Paris tapes. For film director Justin Kreutzmann, the theatrical release of his concert documentary celebrating the life of The Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek has been a long time coming. That documentary, “The Doors: Break On Thru – A Celebration of Ray Manzarek, ” will screen in select theaters worldwide Feb. 12, on what would have been Manzarek’s 81st birthday. After losing Manzarek to bile duct cancer in 2013, the surviving members of The Doors — drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger — came together in 2016 on what would have been Manzarek’s 77th birthday. For the first time in 15 years, the pair got together on stage for a benefit show at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and jammed out hard and loud for Manzarek while also conjuring up the spirit of their late bandmate, Jim Morrison. The concert — which also featured Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins, Gov’t Mule’s singer-guitarist Warren Haynes, Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo, Foo Fighters drummer and vocalist Taylor Hawkins and keys player Rami Jaffee, Dead Sara vocalist Emily Armstrong, Exene Cervenka and John Doe from X and more — was all captured by Kreutzmann and his crew. He included interviews with Densmore and Krieger and footage from a previous sitdown he’d done with Manzarek at Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir’s TRI Studios in San Rafael, Calif. The Doors’ Ray Manzarek will be remembered on what would have been his 81st birthday on Feb. 12, 2020 with the limited theatrical release of “The Doors: Break On Thru – A Celebration of Ray Manzarek. ” Surviving members of The Doors and others gathered at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles in 2016 for the special concert/documentary to honor Manzarek, who died on May 20, 2013. Swift, contributing photographer) “I like the aspect of it being worldwide and it’s not live, but you know everyone is watching it on this one day, all in theaters together, ” Kreutzmann said during a recent phone interview. “It does give it some immediacy and excitement. ” Kreutzmann is the son of Grateful Dead and Dead & Company drummer Bill Kreutzmann. He also produced the 2014 documentary, “The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir, ” and was a producer alongside Martin Scorsese on the 2017 Grateful Dead documentary, “Long Strange Trip. ” “I’ve obviously been to these types of things for my dad’s band, so I’m excited to see what Doors fans do when they all congregate to watch something like this, ” he added. Manzarek was a founding member of The Doors and known for his propulsive playing on hits like “Light My Fire, ” “L. Woman, ” “Riders On the Storm, ” “Break On Through (To the Other Side), ” “Hello, I Love You” and “The End. ” After Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek formed the mid-’70s band Nite City with vocalist Noah James and former Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison. He was also a noted producer, who famously worked with Los Angeles punk rock band X on its first four albums. Manzarek continued to play the music of The Doors later in his life along with Krieger, calling their version The Doors of the 21st Century. In 2012, the band was honored at the Sunset Strip Music Festival and Manzarek joined X for an intimate gig at the Roxy Theatre to play X’s 1980 debut “Los Angeles” in its entirety. Kreutzmann said that though he really only knew Manzarek for one day, even he could tell that there was something special about him. “Obviously, they’re very different people, but he almost had that (Jerry) Garcia thing, where you meet him and he’s really smart about music, but he also just knows a lot about a lot of stuff, ” he said, adding that the Doors’ music was fueled by Manzarek’s unique sound. “It’s just so distinctive. John (Densmore) says this in the movie, so I’m paraphrasing, but when you hear it, you definitely know it’s The Doors and that’s Ray Manzarek and that’s such a unique gift. There are so many musicians out there that are talented and great, but you can’t distinctively say within two or three bars, ‘Oh, that’s such and such, ’ but with Ray Manzarek, there’s just no question. ” While getting to know Densmore and Krieger during the interview process for the film, Kreutzmann said it was exciting to get to hear the small details behind some of the band’s biggest moments and the internal politics of The Doors. “I was editing ‘Riders On the Storm’ with John and he just started tapping to the beat and talking about that session when they wrote it and I was thinking, ‘This is the coolest Doors thing ever, ’” he said. “He was like ‘Yeah, Jim came in and Ray was sitting there saying we should do this …’ We were getting all these inside little bits that you don’t get to normally hear about. Like what was going on that day, who talked about what, and whose idea was this or that. It was just a little glimpse into how the band operated or what they call band head … how they all communicated with each other when it was just the four of them, so that was really interesting to learn. ” For those that miss out on the screening, Kreutzmann said he’s not sure when or where the film will be seen again. Proceeds from the film are all going to Stand Up 2 Cancer, he notes, so it’s not a money-making venture that will be immediately available for home video. “No one is getting rich on this, but I think it’s a strong enough piece of work that someone will see it and go ‘Hey, we could stream this so everyone could watch it, ’” he said. “But I don’t know if there are any deals in place on that just yet, but hopefully everyone is open to it. ” “I’m just the director, ” he said with a laugh. “So they don’t share that stuff with me. I’ll hear about that when you do. ” Here is a listing of some theaters in Southern California that are screening “The Doors: Break On Thru – A Celebration of Ray Manzarek. ” Orange County The Frida, 305 E. 4th Street, Santa Ana. 7:30 p. m. If anything Ive grown to love them more and more over the years! Just the perfect storm of musicians and personalities! God John is such a pro- drummer!
